We Abhor Spam and Unsolicited Commercial Email

There's not much in life that's worse than opening your e-mail account to find that your inbox has been invaded by tons of spam. You know the drill -- cheap mortgages, cheap sex and cheap herbs to increase, ahem, performance. Since creating the Stress Dynamics website the amount of crud that lands in our in boxes has increased exponentially. Quite frankly, it stresses us out. Though sometimes it feels that one is powerless against this scourge of the information age there are steps you can take to decrease the amount of spam that hits your mailbox. They are:

  1. Lend your support to organizations that fight spam such as CAUCE -- the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email. CAUCE is an ad hoc, all volunteer organization, created by Netizens to advocate for a legislative solution to the problem of UCE (a/k/a "spam"). Their organization is free to join (we’ve signed up!) and their aim is to get legislation passed that will effectively punish spammers. Their site is located at http://www.cauce.org.
  2. Thoroughly explore those registration forms for the opt-out check boxes. Sometimes they can be hard to find. By registering your new lawn tractor you may inadvertently end up on a mailing list which gets sold to a spammer.
  3. Use an online email account for most business transactions such as Yahoo Mail or Gmail by Google. Both offer excellent spam filters. You can set them up to automatically clean up spam though we recommend viewing your spam folder as occasionally innocent emails end up there.

Another problem area when you have your own business is the junk fax. These have become so infuriating that we have disconnected our fax machine to prevent from getting phone calls from junk faxers in the middle of the night. You can fight back and sue the people who send this stuff though. For tips on how to do this check out JunkFax.org. The site is chock-full of information on how to deal with this scourge.
